The Dancers & The Muybridge Series (2008) |
|
THE DANCERS This collection of six oil paintings is the beginning of a series I am doing based on a film I made of two professional dancers performing naked in my studio. From several still frames, I did a great many drawings, studies and small colour sketches to use as source material. I have not reinvented any of the lines, shapes or forms but selected only those I felt were the essential ones and put two, often three, overlapping positions together to try and describe the energy and rhythm of their movements. Although I have kept to the realistic gradations of light and shade, I have deliberately used my own set of colours to create a visual interpretation of the music. I am an artist who has spent almost all his life drawing and painting as well as, for the past twenty seven years, working as a film director. Now I am continuing to work with all these three disciplines together. THE MUYBRIDGE SERIES These are the latest paintings in a series I have been doing for several years based on the early photographic work of Eadweard Muybridge who made time-lapse studies of the naked human figure in motion. |
